Whether you’re fascinated by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding or you’re sick of it, it’s a major 2018 event. Every detail has been scrutinized for months, as it happens every time there’s a Royal Wedding. Weeks away from the big May 19th date, HBO has revealed they’ll be covering the event. And the anchors are the most perfect we could imagine: Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon!
The two Saturday Night Live alums have been officially announced as HBO’s Royal Wedding correspondents. Even better: they won’t be appearing as themselves, but as their Funny Or Die characters Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan.
A few months after “hosting” this year’s Rose Parade, Cord and Tish are back to fancy it up. They’ll be joined by collaborator and fellow SNL alum Tim Meadows, plus other yet-unspecified special guests. We can expect the whole thing to be very dignified and definitely in tune with the British monarchy. Or, you know, not at all.
Ferrell and Shannon first introduced these characters earlier this year, supposedly as long-standing local hosts for the Rose Parade. While fans could quickly recognize them as the two actors/comedians, they still did press in character. And, of course, not everyone is familiar with the two, so there was hilarious room for complaints.
In fact, Stephen Colbert interviewed Shannon months later, and they discussed how there had been some very angry viewers. In all, it seems people unfamiliar with their work were definitely angry at the coverage’s lack of seriousness. As the show was on Prime Video, it can be reviewed on the Amazon site. And there are some pretty hilarious ones! Before setting up to watch Ferrell and Shannon commenting on the Royal Wedding, read the hilarious Rose Parade reviews.
The coverage is called The Royal Wedding Live with Cord and Tish! and airs live on May 19th. Broadcast will begin on 7:30 a.m. EDT. Both actors will be fully in character, satirizing the biggest event of the British (and every other) monarchy.
